What is the difference between ellaOne and Levonelle (levonorgestrel)?

EllaOne and Levonelle are two well-known emergency contraceptive pills, commonly used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure (such as a condom breaking). While they serve the same primary function, there are key differences between them in terms of their active ingredients, effectiveness, time frame for use, and how they work in the body.

Active Ingredients:

EllaOne contains the active ingredient ulipristal acetate, whereas Levonelle contains levonorgestrel, a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. These two ingredients belong to different classes of medications, meaning they work in slightly different ways within the body.

Ulipristal acetate (EllaOne) is a selective progesterone receptor modulator that prevents or delays ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary). It also has the potential to alter the lining of the womb (endometrium), making it less receptive to a fertilized egg.

Levonorgestrel (Levonelle), on the other hand, primarily works by preventing ovulation. It can also alter the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg. However, it is not effective if ovulation has already occurred, which can limit its effectiveness depending on the timing of unprotected intercourse.

Time Frame for Use:

The timing of use after unprotected sex is a significant difference between EllaOne and Levonelle.

EllaOne can be taken up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex and is still effective. Its window of use is wider, giving it a greater time frame for effectiveness compared to Levonelle.

Levonelle, however, is effective when taken within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex. It is generally recommended that it be taken as soon as possible after the event for maximum effectiveness, but it can still reduce the risk of pregnancy if taken up to three days later. After 72 hours, it’s no longer effective.

Effectiveness:

Both medications are highly effective at preventing pregnancy, but the differences in their timing and mechanisms can influence their overall effectiveness.

EllaOne has a slightly higher overall effectiveness, especially when taken closer to the 120-hour mark. Studies suggest that EllaOne is effective for up to 98% of women who take it within the 120-hour time frame, even if taken later than 72 hours.

Levonelle has an effectiveness rate of approximately 85% when taken within 72 hours. The effectiveness decreases the longer you wait after unprotected sex, especially after the 48-hour mark.

Both Levonelle and ellaOne are available without a prescription, meaning it can be purchased over-the-counter at ABC Health Clinic.

Side Effects:

Both EllaOne and Levonelle may cause side effects, although the frequency and severity of these effects can vary.

Common side effects of both include nausea, headache, fatigue, abdominal pain, and changes to menstrual cycles. However, EllaOne may have a slightly higher incidence of side effects due to its different active ingredient, particularly nausea. Some women also experience changes in their periods, such as earlier or later menstruation.

It’s important to note that emergency contraception pills are not intended for regular use, and neither should be relied on as a primary form of contraception. If emergency contraception is needed frequently, it’s a good idea to consult a healthcare provider about more reliable, long-term options.
