What is Chikungunya?
Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease spread by Aedes mosquitoes — the same type that transmits dengue and Zika. It is primarily transmitted to humans through the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes Aedes (aegypti and albopictus). The disease is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions.
Between January and June 2025, a total of 73 cases were reported. The majority of cases were in travellers returning from Sri Lanka, India and Mauritius. Currently there is an outbreak in the region of the Americas, including Bolivia, Brazil and Cuba. In the African region, Mauritius. In the Eastern Mediterranean region, Pakistan and Somalia have reported outbreaks. In the European region, an epidemic has been reported in La Reunion and in Mayotte. In South East Asia region, the countries reporting outbreaks include India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The Western Pacific region includes outbreaks in China and Indonesia.
Symptoms include sudden onset of high fever, severe joint pain, muscle aches, rash, and fatigue. The onset is typically 4-8 days (range 2-12 days) after the bite of an infected mosquito.
While most people recover fully, joint pain can last for weeks or even months.
There’s no specific treatment, so prevention through vaccination and mosquito bite avoidance is key.
Chikungunya Vaccine at ABC Health Clinic
There are TWO different vaccinations available for the prevention of Chikungunya.
IXCHIQ and Vimkunya are the 2 vaccines available in the UK.
Vimkunya is available to travellers aged 12 and above, with no upper age limit. This is an inactivated (non replicating virus) vaccine.
IXCHIQ is a live attenuated vaccine in the US, UK and European Union. This vaccine is only available for immunocompetent adults aged between 18 and 59 years old. * We will advise on how to safely administer other live vaccines such as MMR, chickenpox and Yellow Fever for our customers.*
The Joint Committee on Vaccinations & Immunisations (JCVI) does note recommend the use of IXCHIQ in adults aged 60 and above, or in people with a thymus disorder or who had a thymectomy because of the risk of serious adverse events (July 2025).
